Final Film opening - Research (film pitch and genre)

Final idea-

All of us are playing ping pong in the opening sequence, and Lila loses. She picks up her phone, acting as a narrative trigger, to tell us about a party. Spencer and Daren give each other a mysterious look, functioning as a reaction shot that hints at hidden motives, and then agree to go. Maya and Lila go upstairs to get ready, creating parallel action that separates the girls’ storyline from the boys’. Maya talks about having a weird feeling about tonight, which works as foreshadowing, and Lila tells her to stop worrying. While Maya and Lila are upstairs, Spencer gives drugs to Daren in a close up that emphasizes the significance of the prop, saying they work and he’ll do it if Daren does it. Maya and Lila walk downstairs, ask Spencer and Daren to leave, and then grab the keys and drive, maintaining continuity editing as the narrative moves forward.

We all pull up to the party in an establishing shot and walk inside, grabbing drinks and talking. Lila and Maya go to the bathroom, allowing off screen action where Daren and Spencer drug their drinks. Maya and Lila come back and take a drink, and after a time cut of 15 minutes, they start hallucinating. Their hallucinations can be shown through distorted POV shots, non‑diegetic sound, and disorienting camera movement to represent their altered state. Maya and Lila go up to Daren and Spencer and ask them to drive home since they don’t feel well. In the car, Maya and Lila go unconscious, which can be shown through a fade‑out or shallow depth of field to highlight their vulnerability. Daren and Spencer make a phone call asking if they’re unconscious yet and give the location. It ends on a final wide shot of the car speeding away, creating a cliffhanger typical of thriller narratives.

Genre-

A thriller genre uses low‑key lighting, high‑contrast shadows, and shaky handheld camera work to create fear and tension. Slow tracking shots build suspense by controlling pacing and guiding audience focus, which reinforces the genre’s themes. The thriller genre relies on enigma codes, restricted narration, and suspense‑driven mise‑en‑scène to keep viewers engaged and emotionally invested.
