Final Film Opening - CCR #1 (Conventions & Representation)
Conventions & Representation
How does your product use or challenge film conventions, and how does it represent social groups or issues?
Script-
Hey guys, so today I’m doing a get ready with me while I explain my AICE Media film opening, because it actually links really well to narrative and representation.
So basically, my film follows a group of friends who see a party invite on their phone, and they decide to go. Straight away, I use enigma codes, to create mystery. For example, Maya gets a weird feeling that something bad is going to happen, but the audience doesn’t know what yet. That builds suspense and makes them want to keep watching.
While I’m doing my makeup, I’m gonna talk about representation. So Maya and Lila are represented as typical teenage girls, like they’re excited, getting ready, and going to a party. This links to social groups and stereotypes, because it shows a realistic teenage lifestyle. But at the same time, we challenge that stereotype because they’re also vulnerable, which shows how appearances can be misleading.
Also, Darren and Spencer are represented as the antagonists, but we don’t reveal that fully at the start. This links to binary oppositions, because we have good vs bad, innocence vs danger, and safety vs risk. The audience slowly realizes that Darren and Spencer aren’t who they seem.
Now I’m just doing my mascara, but another thing is gender representation. The girls are shown as more emotional and intuitive, especially Maya, who senses danger. Meanwhile, the boys are shown as more dominant and manipulative, which reflects common media stereotypes.
Also, the use of costume and mise-en-scène helps represent character. For example, the party outfits show the girls are excited and carefree, which contrasts with the darker narrative that unfolds later.
Finally, this whole opening sets up a moral message about trust and peer pressure. It shows how dangerous situations can come from people you think you know.
So yeah, that’s my film opening explained while I get ready.
